Melissa’s story
Melissa was born and raised in Sioux Falls and we met in college. She originally began a nursing program but discovered that she didn’t really like the program. Since she needed to graduate with some major, she ended up studying business and graduated with an economics degree. Since she continued to be interested in the medical field, Melissa went into health insurance underwriting after graduation.
Shortly after we married we had our first daughter, and Melissa chose to stay home to care for her. It wasn’t long before she realized that she wanted to continue working outside of the home as well. That’s when she decided to go back to school to finish her nursing degree, and with that, she became a school nurse.
Melissa felt that she performed an important duty as an in-person school nurse during the height of the pandemic, but now that we are about to become empty nesters, we both started thinking about our next stage of life.
Our What’s Next
After years of raising our 3 daughters, we are coming to the end of their time at home. This turning point got us thinking about what’s next for us. We are an active family and enjoy being involved in our local community and since the girls were little we have been involved in soccer.
We were excited to learn that a professional women’s soccer team was coming to Sioux Falls, however, the deal fell through.
This got me thinking about what it would take to bring a professional women’s soccer team to our community. The more I thought about it the more I realized that this was the perfect time for us to get involved.
I broached the subject with Melissa and she loved the idea. After bringing a couple of friends on board we created a business plan and submitted an application to the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) to bring a professional women’s team to Sioux Falls.
How we learned how to start a professional soccer team
Now, neither of us have ever coached soccer–nor do we play–so we had a steep learning curve ahead of us. But we relished the opportunity to create a football club to promote women in sports and develop an amazing platform.
We used all the resources at our disposal to help us understand how to build Sioux Falls City FC. We reached out to other club owners and learned from their expertise so that we could create a structure to guide us.
Listen in to our 100th episode to hear our mission and understand how we created values to guide the decisions we make at our soccer club.
