John Kelley inherited the entrepreneurial spirit
John Kelley got the entrepreneurial spirit from his father. As a young boy, he would ride with his dad as he drove to see clients all over town. He learned from his father early on that you can work for someone else and make money, but life is even more enjoyable if you work for yourself.
Even before he graduated high school John had started his own business as a DJ. This business allowed him to choose his own hours and earn more than his regular full-time job.
John stays busy with firefighting and side gigs
John found his passion as a firefighter at a young age. He thought that becoming a volunteer firefighter would be a good way to get out of work at his day job in the city clerk’s office. However, he didn’t realize that he would really find a passion in being a firefighter.
Now John is a paid firefighter that works 2 days a week. The rest of his time is devoted to his side gigs. John expanded his DJ offerings to create the OMG Event Company which offers live streaming and photo booth services for weddings, private parties, and corporate events. He also is a marketing advisor for Beefy Marketing, a full-service digital marketing firm specializing in websites, SEO, social media management, and more.
John needs to ensure his family is provided for first
Even though John is ready to turn his side hustles into the main event, he isn’t leaping into the change without careful planning. Since he needs to ensure that his family will be provided for, he wants to ensure he has a full year of income saved before he kisses his reliable paycheck goodbye.
Having a vision in place first helps him stay focused on his goal and create a strategy to achieve that goal. Since he still loves his work as a firefighter, he isn’t in a rush or worried about sticking to a timeline. He already has some flexibility and time freedom rolled into his job, so he can still dedicate plenty of time to his entrepreneurial endeavors.
There are many variables that come into play when one chooses to step away from full-time work to fully dedicate themselves to their small businesses. Listen in to learn from John and hear what you should consider before stepping away from your steady employment.
