How to know when it’s time to move on
In most careers, leaving your job doesn’t impact many people. But in Carey’s case, his decision to step down from his role as a pastor was made after careful consideration for his congregation. But after he decided to leave, the hardest part was picking what to do next!
Initially, he decided to pursue a few different paths before realizing that his audio editing skills had followed him throughout his career. So, he created a podcasting business that he’s been able to scale to meet his many clients’ needs successfully.
Learning from your mistakes
As a business owner, a lot of weight falls on your shoulders to not only build a business but to cover all of your bases as well. When asked what the smartest thing was he has ever done for his company, Carey said it was deciding to bring on a team. Solopreneurs often want to default to doing everything themselves. But by bringing on help he’s been able to focus on higher-value tasks and his team alleviates the pressure elsewhere.
On the flip side, Carey said his biggest money mistake was hiring too many people too fast. Early in his business, he knew he needed help, but without the right systems in place, he could not support them all. One of the best things about being a Solopreneur is having the time to do the things we enjoy, having a team can help you maintain that lifestyle.
Moving forward with a success mindset
A success mindset doesn’t mean that you make something up that you want and say it until it comes true. The action you take to reach your goals is a combination of belief and effort, which will lead to success!
To prepare your business for any potential changes, understand how and when things shift throughout the year so you can adjust accordingly. It’s also crucial that you learn how to master your finances so you don’t become a victim to your budget, salary, or an empty savings account.
Your mindset about money should be, “anything is possible!” As your business grows, consider delegation so you can focus on the aspects of your business that need your unique expertise. But, make sure you have the right systems in place first!
