How Katie got her start
Katie had no idea what she wanted to do in college. After floating around trying a variety of different classes, she finally graduated with a degree in finance. Upon graduation, she got a job in strategic and financial planning that she really enjoyed. However, she wasn’t fond of the industry that she worked with. She knew that this wouldn’t be her job forever.
After her kids were born in 2012, Katie started finding her own clients and consulting on the side. A move in 2017 was the catalyst that drove her to push her business full-time.
Today, Katie coaches creative entrepreneurs as they build thriving businesses so that they can make a living doing what they love. She helps passionate creatives learn the foundational business strategy they need to build their business around their skills..
Do you run your business off a list or a plan?
Many business owners have a business plan, but they disregard the plan to focus on getting the day-to-day items on their to-do lists checked off. They become so focused on their daily tasks that they lose sight of the outcomes that they are trying to achieve. These business owners stay busy all day but they struggle to get ahead because they aren’t focused on outcomes.
Before you create your to-do list, you need to create a business plan. The business plan should drive the list–the list is not the plan.
3 elements of a plan
The difference between a list and a plan is that the plan starts with the definition of success. It defines what you are trying to achieve.
It is important to anchor your plan by thinking about where you are headed and how you are going to get there.
Your plan is composed of three elements: priority, goal, and actions.
The priority – Think about what is most important in your business right now. This should be a theme that won’t be resolved by just one project or task. One example of a priority is to grow your audience.
The goal – Translate your priority into a goal that is specific and outcome-oriented. The goal will be the way that you know that the priority is resolved.
The actions – These are the tasks and projects that you work on daily that move you closer to your goal. We all have givens that we must work on in our businesses each day, but these actions are priority focused and drive you toward your goal.
Without distinct priorities and goals, you won’t have a clear understanding of what you should be working on day to day to make progress on those outcomes that you want to see. As you get started, focus on one priority in a 90-day period.
