How Derrick began Shelby Row Productions
While working as a freelance audio editor, Derrick quickly reached his maximum earning potential. He knew that if he wanted to earn more he would have to scale up to increase his profits. So in 2019, Derrick decided to start his own podcast production agency, Shelby Row Productions. Through his agency, Derrick began building a team of experts that would propel his business to the next level by providing multiple service offerings to his clients.
Over the past 2 years, Shelby Row Productions has grown into a 6-figure company. As a solopreneur, Derrick continues to strive for more. Derrick’s dream is to have his own local podcast production studio.
Listen to the whispers
While he perused his local farmer’s market one day, Derrick got an idea of how he could make a name for himself locally. Derrick’s idea was to create a podcast for his hometown that highlights local businesses by interviewing the owners to hear their stories.
This is the type of idea that I call the whispers–the whispers are those golden nuggets that could turn into gold mines if you see them through. Listening to the whispers is the first step in bringing an idea to life.
Create a vision
For Derrick to make a name for himself in his hometown, he would have to get to know other local business owners, so his first step was joining his town’s chamber of commerce.
The Real Hernando podcast was created as Derrick’s marketing arm to help him break into his local marketplace. This would be Derrick’s way to give back to the community while, at the same time, building relationships with potential clients through his podcast. Not only is The Real Hernando podcast a great way for Derrick to network with other area business owners, and it would also help them form a reciprocal relationship.
Take action
Derrick planned out his new podcast for 6 months by creating a website, social media, and lining up interviews. The podcast launch date was set for February, coinciding with his ribbon-cutting ceremony at the chamber of commerce.
Although there won’t be an immediate return on his podcasting efforts, Derrick is in this for the long game. He understands that The Real Hernando podcast will eventually lead to returns on his investment. For now, he uses his production agency, Shelby Row Productions, as the sponsor. However, in the future, he can monetize the show by selling advertisements.
Don’t miss this interview with Derrick Michaud to hear how you can take those gold nugget whispers and turn them into gold mines.
