A lifetime of audio engineering led Derrick to build his podcast production agency
After years of picking up side hustles to supplement his earnings as a musician, Derrick Michaud stumbled into audio editing. Audio editing turned out to be a perfect way to use his audio engineering talents gleaned from years as a working musician. He quickly learned how to help podcasters improve the quality of their podcasts. In just two years Derrick took this side job to full-time work with a full plate of customers. That’s when it dawned on him that the only way to continue to grow would be to create his own agency.
That’s how Shelby Row Productions was born. Derrick hired other audio engineers to handle the extra volume of work that came his way then he began building a team of experts that could help him expand Shelby Row’s offerings. Now his production company offers packages that include show notes, video editing, graphic design, transcription, and more.

Just get started
The first step in starting a podcast is to figure out the who and the why. What do you want to talk about? Who do you want to reach and how can you reach that audience? Understand the kind of podcast you want to build so that you can find your niche.
Once you know what you want to talk about, then you need to simply get started. Break through the fear and record yourself. Start with a simple mike setup, hop on Zoom, and press record. When you’re done, send the audio to a friend to hear what they have to say about your recording.
What next?
You’ll want to make sure that you have a title that is creative yet easily searchable. After you come up with the perfect title, it’s time to create the cover art. This isn’t as hard as you may think.
After you break through your fears, the rest is easy. There are plenty of people that can help you edit and publish your podcast.
Listen to Derrick’s advice for ways to find people to help you get started. Learn why starting a podcast isn’t as daunting as you might think.
