Marisa’s tempestuous childhood led her to shy away from conflict
Marisa Ferrera is no stranger to discord. Her childhood was rife with conflict and that background led her to shy away from disputes as much as possible as she got older. However, she was surprised to find that skirting conflict didn’t help alleviate any struggles. She began to realize that she was burying her emotions by steering away from disagreements.
As she sought counseling, Marisa began to understand that protecting herself from the pain of conflict meant that she wasn’t fully feeling her positive emotions either. Slowly she opened up the locked door of her emotions and learned to communicate in a way that honored her boundaries as well as others. These small steps outside her comfort zone led her to understand that conflict can be a gift leading to healing and deeper relationships.
Take charge of your own emotions
One way that many people react to conflict is by feeling triggered. This is our way of projecting as we react to disputes. Learning to recognize your triggers can help you understand what issues stem from the past. Rather than reverting to a childlike state, take a step back when conflict starts to occur. Doing so could help your partner come back from their child state. Both parties working in an adult state can empower you to take charge and work through your emotions.
How to resolve conflicts over money
Disagreements over money are prevalent and relationships and can even lead to relationships ending. Once you look back at your past relationship with money you can understand your own needs and desires so that you can express them in healthy ways. It is important to communicate your needs and speak what is true for you. Once you open this line of communication then you can begin to create agreements about money. Understanding both you and your partner’s needs and wants, communicating, and setting up agreements that work for both party saves relationships.
We are all doing the best we can with the tools we have. When we give others empathy and compassion, we can resolve any conflict peacefully.
