Perseverance pays off
Chesney started his YouTube channel on his laptop when he was only 13 years old. YouTube was starting to become a hot spot for gamers and Chesney wanted in on the action. Even though he started by producing a lot of content he didn’t find success right away.
Chesney’s first channel reached 200 subscribers which seemed like a lot for a kid who only had a handful of friends. The second channel he developed gained 500 subscribers, but that still wasn’t the kind of reach he was striving for.
To learn how to improve his channel, Chesney reached out to his most critical friend for advice. Chesney’s friend frankly pointed out that his videos weren’t very good. That’s when he realized that even though he was producing a high volume of videos, he wasn’t producing high-quality videos.
Quality trumps quantity
He understood right away that he needed to improve his editing skills to create higher-quality videos, so he went back to the drawing board and created a brand new YouTube channel. The first video he produced on that channel took him a month to create and was, by far, the best video he had ever produced.
That hard work provided immediate results. Within an hour he had 400 views, in 7 days he had 1,400 views–more views than on any of the other videos he had ever created! Chesney knew then that he had to strive to improve his videos with each and every episode.
Record with the viewer in mind
The second thing that Chesney learned was that he had to create videos that other people wanted to watch, not just what he wanted to produce. When he started studying the trends and statistics he learned what would draw in viewers and subscribers. Now Chesney carefully studies the trends and carefully creates compelling videos that grab people’s attention that ensure they stick around to watch until the end.
